Salt and Limes

The Tavern

The Tavern is a prohibition era style restaurant with some of the best food in downtown Tulsa. They are known for the Tavern Burger and for making amazing cocktails. Despite being known for a burger, this is a high end joint which even has valet parking. Almost everything is made in house from scratch, including their bread. I would suggest making a reservation for a window table because it is a very popular place.

When we walked up to the front door, we were greeted with mellow lighting and a long gorgeous bar. We were seated against the wall on a long gray booth facing the decorated bar.

The menu was short and sweet offering things that they have perfected over the years as well as a few off menu specials. With only a a handful of appetizers, we made our choices; Deviled egg trifecta, and the beef tenderloin skewers.

When the appetizers came out, the Deviled egg trifecta displayed two sets of three different eggs- “Green Eggs and Ham” aka Basil and Bacon, Sriacha flavored, and a cheese flavored egg adorned with baked cheese on top. To be completely honest, I'm not the biggest fan of deviled eggs- but these were a level beyond former members of this particular food group. The flavors were so masterfully chosen and were all paired so well. The Beef tenderloin skewers were even better! They were seasoned just right, and the beef was extremely tender and juicy.

For my entree we ordered the Tavern Burger and the roasted pesto chicken. The Tavern Burger was by far one of the best burgers I have ever eaten. It was cooked to perfection and every bite was a stark reminder that this amazing experience would soon end. The burger had a mushroom cognac sauce which was amazing. I am typically not a fan of mushrooms but this changed my mind (an indicator that this burger was not designed by mortal hands). The burger came with “Angry Mac and Cheese” and it was very much so. I was warned of how spicy the side would be, but I ventured on. Every bite reminded me how much of a wimp I am, but I kept coming back for more. I highly recommend you get these two items together. The pesto chicken was extremely tender. It came on top of a bed of cheesy grits that were to die for, with a side of grilled tomatoes. The pesto on the chicken wasn't as potent as you'd expect. It had a very subtle taste, which is rare for pesto, but worked well with the rest of the dish.

The meal ended with an “Old Cuban” from the bar and a slice of Flourless Chocolate Torte. This cocktail contained Bacardi Rum, champagne, mint, and lime. It was a very satisfying and flavorful drink, and one of their most popular cocktails. The Torte was decadent and it came dressed with raspberry sauce. Sharing one slice was a good idea because it was so rich. By the end of the night we were waddling out of the restaurant with big smiles on our faces. Needless to say, we will be coming back.
